British Values

At our school we actively promote British Values, alongside our chosen Christian Values. These are not mutually exclusive, so the links the children make strengthen understanding of these important values and how they can make a real impact both in their lives and in the lives of those around them. As such these values are woven throughout our school curriculum and school ethos.

Teaching British values to children improves their spiritual, moral social, and cultural (SMSC) development. British values underpin what it is to be a British citizen in a modern and diverse Britain, and promote moral and cultural understanding that celebrates the diversity of the UK. These values are fundamental to British society and promote cohesion and integration. 

They can be seen in five focus areas:

Our children will grow:

• An understanding of how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process
• An appreciation that living under the rule of law protects individual citizens and is essential for their wellbeing and safety
• An understanding that the freedom to hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law
• An acceptance that people having different faiths or beliefs to oneself (or having none) should be accepted, and should not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour
• An understanding of the importance of identifying and combatting discrimination

This includes the promotion of protected characteristics. The term 'Protected Characteristics' was first introduced in The Equality Act 2010. This act defined nine specific characteristics that are protected from discrimination: Age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.  These areas are explored at an age appropriate level through our PSHE scheme and within elements of learning throughout our inclusive curriculum. E.g. A celebration of women in science, a focus on respect as a key Christian value within collective worship.

We are deeply committed to ensuring all our school policies are inclusive and promote equality, as this reflects our core Christian values and our British Values, as part of our welcoming and positive school ethos. Everyone is values in our school’s community as we serve with Grace.
